A surfboard is the most essential item a surfer needs besides skills and waves.

There are two avenues to choose from when purchasing a surfboard: wholesale surfboards and used surfboards. Deciding between buying wholesale surfboards and used surfboards is based on more than just price. Many other factors also must be taken into consideration.

One important factor to consider when deciding between wholesale surfboards and used surfboards is the type of surfboard needed. Surfboards generally are divided into two classes: longboards and shortboards. Longboards are usually between 9 and 12 feet long and 21 to 24 wide. Longboards have a rounded nose and generally are used for smoother, more graceful surfing. Longboards are perfect to use for surfing medium waves.

Shortboards tend to be used by more advanced surfers. They range between 5 to 7 feet in length and 16 to 19 inches in width. Shortboards give surfers the ability to change direction quickly and perform advanced maneuvers. As a result, they generally are considered to be designed for intermediate to advanced surfers.

The surfer’s height, weight and level of experience are important factors to consider when searching for the perfect surfboard. An individual's height and weight will be important deciding factors in determining the height, material and model of surfboard needed. Likewise, an individual's experience level will not only help to determine between a shortboard and longboard, but also whether to invest in wholesale surfboards or used surfboards.

Most surfboards can be purchased at surf shops, through the mail or through the Internet. All three markets sell both wholesale and used surfboards. Wholesale surfboards tend to be the ideal chose for advanced surfers who are aware of the type of surfboard best suiting them and are willing to invest in custom-made surfboards. Wholesale longboards range in price between $450 and $700 and shortboard range in price between $350 and $500.

However, used surfboards should not be disregarded. Used surfboards tend to be ideal for novice surfers and individuals on a budget. Novice surfers can surf and used surfboards and not be afraid of making mistakes and wrecking the surfboard in the process. Also, used surfboards are sold at sale and discounted prices compared to wholesale surfboards. As a result, they are cheaper in price. Used longboards generally sell for $300 and shortboards for around $100.

However, buyers should be cautious when purchasing a used surfboard. Although used surfboards will not be in mint condition like wholesale surfboards, it also should be free from severe water damage to the foam, free of holes in the fiberglass and the fins should be securely attached. All necessary repairs should also be made to the used surfboard before it is sold.
