The first surfboards reflected the strong ties and integrated nature Hawaiians had with their island. Creating surfboards was the by-product of sacred ritual and intricate work by the hands of their creators. Although today’s surfboards are made of man-made materials ranging from polystyrene to epoxy, instead of the wood of the koa or breadfruit tree, the majority of surfboards are still proudly shaped-by-hand like their original counterparts.

Surfboard manufacturers are based throughout the world. Unlike the copious factories that churn out an endless supply of generic products, most surfboard houses still staff their stables with master shapers. Even surfboard manufactures like Hawaiian Island Creations and Rusty, popular with surfers and non-surfers alike, have built their names on the talents of three or four names.

Surf manufacturers that came to life as surfing migrated from the Big Island to the mainland still continue to thrive today. In part or in whole, the "original" surfboard houses like those of Larry Gordon and Floyd Smith, Dewey Weber, Robert August, and Bill Stewart, have been part of the surf culture since the conception of modern surfing. Surfboard manufacturers like Town and Country owned and designs by Craig Sugihara, are still considered the most premier surfboards even though they came along later in surfing's time-line.

Younger houses like Aloha, Hawaiian Island Creations, Kechele Surfboards and Lost have still held to the methods of earlier houses. The boards are still hand shaped by masters who in addition to their work for comparably large surfboard manufacturer also have their own shops. Australia's Aloha surfboards are shaped by artisans like Danny Sherwood, Mauricio Gil and Chris Goulding. Legends like Eric Arakawa, Kerry Tokoro, Steve Morgan and Lynn Shell are the backbones of the creations and Hawaiian Island Creations. Lost was founded by classically trained shaper Matt Biolos, an understudy of master shapers like Timmy Patterson, Terry Senate and Randy Sleigh.

Although not as traditional as other surfboard manufacturers, Matt Kechele of Kechele surfboards has incorporated machining into his boards. Tools like his Rocker Machine and his use of computer aided shaping have allowed for new levels of "trueness" and "consistency" in his shortboards. Despite the break from the time-tested methods of board making, Kechele's boards are team-tested, and considered some of the best boards around.

Many surfboard manufacturers have become popular for more than there surfboard shapers. Surfboard manufacturers have moved into other board-sports. Surfboard houses have gone on to include not only surfboards but surfwear in addition to skateboards and skate-gear, snowboards and snow-wear.

Large or small, today's surfboard manufacturers, take great pride in their shapers, much like their predecessors. In most surfing circles, shapers like Al Merrick are as much a part of the legends and folklore as the surfers riding their boards.
